Reformer Pilates Through Pregnancy and Beyond
Share
Some of the most heartfelt reviews we receive at Reformly come from new mums. One customer told us she was able to complete 20-minute sessions while her baby played on a mat right beside the machine — squeezing movement into a season of life that usually leaves very little time for it.
Reformer Pilates has a long history of being used to support the body through pregnancy, birth recovery and the return to movement afterward — largely because it's low-impact, adjustable, and doesn't rely on jumping, heavy loading or high-intensity bursts to be effective.
Why reformer pilates suits this stage of life
- Adjustable resistance. Spring tension on reformers can be scaled right down, letting you work at a gentle level and build back up gradually.
- Supported positions. The carriage of the reformer and straps offer stability that's harder to find with free-standing exercises, which can be reassuring as balance and core strength shift.
- Low-impact by design. There's no jarring or jumping involved, which is part of why so many people return to reformer work early in their postpartum journey.
- It fits around naps, not the other way around. A home reformer means training in 20-minute windows, at odd hours, without a studio timetable to work around.
A note on safety
Every pregnancy and every recovery is different, and reformer Pilates is not a one-size-fits-all program during this time. If you're pregnant or in the postpartum period, please check in with your doctor, obstetrician or a women's health physiotherapist before starting or returning to any exercise routine, including reformer work. Where possible, learning foundational technique from a qualified pre/postnatal Pilates instructor — even for a handful of sessions — will help you understand which movements and modifications suit your body right now.
Bringing it home
For many of our customers, the appeal of a home reformer during this season isn't really about intensity — it's about consistency. Being able to do a short, well-supported reformer session between feeds, without packing a bag or booking a class, often matters more than any single workout.
As one Reformly customer put it, it became "the biggest blessing" during a stage of life where finding twenty uninterrupted minutes felt nearly impossible.
